Ag Appreciation Day

We could never express enough gratitude for being able to live and grow our business in such a beautiful, rural area as Ellensburg. This may surprise you, but there are many residents that grow up in the Kittitas Valley, a place immersed in agriculture, and they rarely have the chance to personally experience or learn about the practices that shape their town.

Rooted in Agriculture

Whenever we have the opportunity to connect our community to their agricultural core, we jump right on it! We signed up as one of the “educators” at the Kittitas Conservation District’s (KCD) annual Elementary Ag Appreciation Day. KCD and Kittitas Valley Event Center (KVEC) have been running this special two-day event for almost 20 years now!

This year, Third grade elementary kids, from all over the county, toured different KVEC stations to learn Ag facts and to interact hands-on with Ellensburg FFA volunteers and organizations like Kittitas County CattleWomen, us (Wheel Line Cider), and the Noxious Weed Board. The volunteers helped out at all the stations with different locals that brought in animals and tractors for the kids to view. They even learned about drone work in relation to farming! The participating organizations, like us, hosted educational stations!

Pomme-ation Station

Our educational booth was all about apple facts and fun. We focused specifically on dessert apples, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Red Delicious! For ten minute segments, kids at our station filled out apple-themed crossword puzzles, learned fun facts like, ‘apple trees being a part of the rose family’ and the meanings of sayings like “you are the apple of my eye” or, “that’s apples to oranges.” Finally, kids got to vote on their favorite type of dessert apple and their favorite type of apple dessert.

Can you guess what the popular votes were?

Winners– Apple pie and Red Delicious!

Thank you for having us KCD and KVEC!
